About Vunga Cooperative & Muraho Trading Co:

Vunga is a well-established female-led co-operative based in the Nyabihu region of Rwanda. Headed up by Daphrose Umiwana (president) and Celeste (agronomy & operations), Vunga processes coffee from its current 180 members as well as further local growers.

The Nyabihu region has some of the highest altitudes in Rwanda and a particular microclimate with exceptional coffee potential. It is unfortunately also prone to extremely heavy rainfall and landslides are an ever-present danger which has impacted Vunga on multiple occasions. We had the privilege of visiting the Vunga station during out trip to Rwanda in May last year and witness first hand the aftermath of a recent landslide, destroying most of their newly built wet mill just as the harvest was starting and they were receiving their first cherry deliveries from nearby farmers. Luckily, they managed to recover their de-pulper from the mud and set up temporary washing tank to be able to carry on with processing.

And the cooperative’s resilience is as impressive as their coffee! Despite their members' lives being severely impacted and the cooperative's infrastructure damaged, the group has time and time again shown an incredible ability to persevere, recover and continue producing amazing coffees and improving lives in their community.

Since 2017 Vunga has partnered with Muraho - a young innovative coffee company with a mission to showcase exceptional quality of Rwandan coffee whilst having a positive impact in their partnering farmer families. Muraho not only works to export Vunga’s coffee, reaching international markets and gaining better prices, the company also provides vital support in their infrastructure upgrades and more.

We are humbled and glad to play a small part in their journey by roasting and sharing their delicious coffee with you all. This lot is Vunga’s signature washed process with an elegant and extremely delicious fruit forward cup. We hope you love it!
