More about Elmer & his coffee:
Elmer is a first generation coffee producer from El Diamante, near the city of Jaen. Together with son Elvis they produce coffee on their 10 hectare farm. With plots are located at various altitudes (1600 - 1900 masl), lower areas are planted with resistant varieties and in higher altitudes they grown Bourbon, Caturras and Geshas. Originally producing commercial coffees, Elmer has turned toward high quality speciality coffees including natural processed micro-lots. With the premiums he has earned over the years, he has built a three-story covered structure with raised beds, specifically for slow drying naturals. His naturals are first rested in bags for 24hrs before slowly drying under cover.
El Diamante is a coffee producing area closest to the city of Jaen, main city in the Cajamarca coffee region. We had the privilege of visiting Elmer and his family at their beautiful farm and found out more about their coffee journey. The land is planted mainly with with Bourbon, Caturra and Catuai varieties but more recently some new, rare varieties like Gesha and Pacamara have also been added.
Originally they were producing more commercial grade coffees but this was proving unsustainable due to the prices these could be sold at. So in recent years they have decided to focus on high quality speciality coffees with distinctive flavour profiles by making improvements in harvesting and exploring new processing methods. Over the past three years they have built a relationship with Falcon (their exporting partners in Peru and our importing partner here in the UK) and earned great premiums for their exceptional coffee which allowed to make further investments on the farm and explore processing further. This year one Elmer’s coffees won 3rd place in the Cup of Excellence competition!
We’ve been buying coffee from Elmer’s son Elvis over the past few years and tried Elmer’s natural for the first time a coupe of years ago. We are super happy to have his coffee back in the roastery again this year tasting sweet and tropical reminding us of grilled pineapple and Turkish delight. Super tasty sweet natural with a boozy touch!
