Joao Hamilton's 10 hectare farm land is located in the Caconde region, on the border of Sao Paolo and Minas Gerais states. The land is divided into two farms – Sitio Canaa and Sitio Novo Canaa lying in altitudes between 1200 – 1350 masl. Joao and his family produce a number of varieties including Catuai, Mundo Novo, Bourdon, Sumatra & Obata. All coffee is now harvested when fully ripe, hand-picked and sorted prior to processing with a variety of methods. This particular lot consists of the unusual hybrid varietal – Obata, grown at Sitio Novo Canaa, pulped and dried on raised beds.

Since 2006 Joao and his brother Ivan have been working in collaboration with Fazenda Ambiental Fortaleza (FAF coffees – coffee growers, consultants and exporters) in order to better the quality of coffee they produce whilst changing their agricultural practices and improving the environment around them.

Joao's approach to coffee growing is best explained in his own words:

“Our production was traditionally commodity and our goal was always to produce as much quantity as possible while using various agro-toxic chemicals. We did not respect Mother Nature nor the quality of the coffee. In recent years this system of commodity coffee had ceased to be sustainable for us.

In 2006 Marcos from Fazenda Ambiental Fortaleza invited our family (Joao Hamilton and Ivan) to take part in a new sustainable method in producing coffee. The objective became to achieve the highest quality while simultaneously respecting nature, reforesting the area around our springs, recycling our trash, refraining from utilizing toxic fertilizers and herbicides giving the practice of cultivating coffee a new inspiration and hope.”

We've had the pleasure of meeting Joao whilst visiting FAF in Brazil several years before setting up this roastery. Even though our encounter was brief Joao's kind, generous and excitable nature made it a memorable one. We can safely say that his dedication to quality coffee production knows no bounds and we're super excited to be roasting his beautiful coffee.
